Why would you want to grow pineapple?
It’s juicy, refreshing, deliciously satisfying.
Where do pineapples grow?
Many of the pineapples we consume come from Latin America, especially Costa Rica. Pineapples prefer the warm, humid climates so if you’re in central Florida like I am, you’re in luck. USDA hardiness zones 9-11.
When to plant pineapples
You have more flexibility if you’re starting your pineapple sprouts indoors. When planting outdoors, pineapples prefer the warmth of late spring to early summer.
When to harvest your pineapple
The entire outer skin should be yellowish and should smell sweet.
What you’ll need to plant a pineapple
Purchase a pineapple at the store, or ask your local juice bar for their pineapple tops that they’d otherwise throw away.
How to plant pineapple tops
This could be done in water or straight in the soil. First let the top dry out for a week or so to reduce risk of rot.
How long does pineapple take to grow?
Pineapples are slow growers. This could take anywhere from 1 to 3 years. In my personal opinion, for a sweet juicy backyard fruit, try melons which go from seed to fruit in just months!
